Max Howden Crystals

I was sent this photo the other week from someone who had removed these Max Howden crystals from an old radio. An Interesting crystal holder, Max ran this company in the 1970’s and his son continued the business into the 1980’s I’m informed. Another piece of the A3BQ / VK3BQ callsign history.

  1. I used to order crystals from MH for my Tandy Electronics Realistic 4 Channel Scanner. You had to be sure of the frequencies you wanted as there was no “reprogramming”.

  2. Hi
A clarification of the years. Max’s forays in radio commenced in the 1910’s and continued throughout his working life. Max Howden Crystals existed as a business from the 1930’s. The 1970’s is when Max retired and his younger son Arthur ‘Bill’ Howden continued the business into the early 1990’s by which time synthesised frequencies had made the demand for specific crystals for the most part redundant.
